Call for Applications: Howell Research Grant

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

W. NATHANIEL HOWELL RESEARCH GRANT

Thanks to a generous gift from the Howell family, the IWI is delighted to announce the W. Nathaniel Howell Research Grant, which will support students doing research in/on the Islamic World(s). The grant is named after the late W. Nathaniel Howell III, who completed his undergraduate and Ph.D. Degrees at UVA, and was committed to the study of the Islamic world writ large. We invite applications from our IWI students for travel grants of up to $3,000, to be disbursed at the beginning of this summer. Grants can be used for research travel or foreign language study abroad.

Recipients of grants from previous years do not qualify as candidates for this application.

Those who are interested and have not received a grant should submit a proposal of no more than three pages (double-spaced). Proposals should describe the research project and travel plans and include a brief budget. The budget should include a note indicating whether the plans are feasible if we are not able to grant the full amount requested.

After students submit their application, we ask that their advisor(s) send a brief email endorsing their research/travel plans.

Please send in applications to tta6uk@virginia.edu at the end of the day on February 6, 2026. We will aim to let people know of the status of their applications by mid-March.
