WGS and the Islamic Worlds Initiative invite you to a talk with Professor Saadia Yacoob.
Saadia Yacoob, Associate Professor of Religion and Associate Faculty in WGSS, Williams College.
Yacoob’s important book, Beyond the Binary: Gender and Legal Personhood in Islamic Law (UC Press, 2024), persuasively demonstrates that early Muslim jurists did not imagine a gender binary but rather multiple, intersecting hierarchies of gender, age, enslavement, lineage, class and other social roles. Yacoob’s innovative project offers feminists new ways to engage with the Islamic legal tradition. Yacoob has demonstrated a commitment to mentoring students and community engagement.
